It’s been a few years since I’ve done an event and looking back I’m really kicking myself for a few mistakes. Here are my post event reflections.

ALWAYS hire a professional photographer. I know plenty of photographers but I had two that that came to me and volunteered to cover the event; neither showed up. So I have no professional proof of the awesomeness that took place. This is important for me because I have a blog and I usually get sponsors. Fortunately this event wasn’t heavily sponsored like normal but I don’t even have good pictures to show future sponsors.

The take away: DON’T DO WHAT I DID IF YOU CAN DO BETTER. Even if you get volunteer photographers, still pay and sign a contract with another photographer.

When hosting events it’s important to focus on building your database/email list. Use your laptop to capture contact information and check attendees in. Mailchimp works well for helping you capture and organize your email list. Having a paper sign-in sheet is great but you may not be able to read a person’s handwriting.

*note: I’ve not implemented this process YET. So again, it’s one of those…DON’T DO WHAT I DID; IF YOU CAN DO BETTER TALKS…
